That four-step process has been the foundation of our communications approach for several decades now. It sounds simple. And it is. But often, in a rush for success, clients unknowingly eliminate a step – or two – or three. For example, have you heard these quick communications solutions, or variations on these themes? “We need some Facebook ads and a TikTok presence” or “Let’s increase our broadcast buys in the dayparts when our audience tunes in most” or, “The CEO needs to reach out to key stakeholders.” But those solutions are missing some key elements.
Unless you are clear about your message: concise, simple, emotionally engaging; and to whom you are speaking, including such factors as age, gender, income, interests, and social media profile, then you may be wasting valuable time and resources. Unless you are clear about those two key points—message and audience—you really aren’t ready to determine the final two factors: validate what your goals for successful communication are and select the best means to achieve them.
Speaking of your goals, what do you really want to achieve? Brand awareness? Higher conversion of initial engagement to completed sales? Move some key influencers towards a policy change you desire? So, do you need an Instagram campaign to make a younger demographic more aware of your organization? A carefully designed online marketing funnel with strategically placed calls to action that will increase web-based sales? A series of one-on-one meetings with significant gatekeepers, or a speech to five hundred of the most important people in your industry sector? Or all the above?
